2. Germination Guarantee Terms and Conditions

To be eligible for The Seed Fair’s 90% Germination Guarantee:

  • Seeds must be germinated within 3 months of the delivery date.
  • You must follow the required germination steps below.
  • You must provide accurate information about the germination process used.
  • You must explain how the seeds were stored between delivery and germination.
  • Claims are subject to review based on the information provided.

Following the required method is important. Water quality, excessive moisture, low temperatures, overheating, improper storage, contaminated handling, or allowing paper towels to dry out can affect germination results.

3. Required Germination Steps

For the best results and eligibility under our germination guarantee, follow the complete process below. This method begins by soaking the seeds before transferring them to moist paper towels between two plates.

Step 1: Soak the Seeds for 14–18 Hours

Pour spring water or distilled water into a clean glass or bowl and place your seeds directly into the water.

Allow the seeds to soak for approximately 14–18 hours.

This initial soaking period allows the seeds to absorb moisture and helps soften the outer shell before they are transferred to the paper towel stage.

Seeds may float or sink during soaking. This alone does not determine whether a seed is viable, so do not discard a seed simply because it remains floating.

Avoid leaving the seeds submerged for significantly longer than the recommended period. After 14–18 hours, move them to the paper towel setup described below.

Step 2: Prepare Four Sheets of Paper Towel

Pour fresh spring water or distilled water into a clean bowl.

Take four sheets of paper towel and soak them in the water. Use two sheets for the bottom layer and two sheets for the top layer.

The goal is to create a consistently moist environment without leaving the seeds sitting in excessive water.

Step 3: Prepare the Bottom Paper Towel Layer

Take the first two soaked paper towel sheets and keep them folded together.

Gently wring out the excess water so the paper towels remain thoroughly moist but are not dripping wet.

Place the two damp paper towel sheets onto a clean plate.

There should not be a large amount of standing water collecting on the plate.

Step 4: Place the Seeds on the Paper Towel

Carefully remove the seeds from the soaking water and transfer them onto the damp paper towel.

Use clean tweezers rather than your fingers whenever possible.

Space the seeds approximately 1 inch apart so each seed has room to germinate without overlapping another seed.

Avoid touching the seeds directly with your hands, as oils and contaminants from the skin can transfer to the seed surface.

Step 5: Cover the Seeds With the Second Paper Towel Layer

Take the remaining two soaked paper towel sheets and gently wring out the excess water.

Carefully place them over the seeds.

Your setup should now be arranged in this order:

  • Bottom plate.
  • Two moist paper towel sheets.
  • Seeds.
  • Two moist paper towel sheets.

The seeds should be enclosed between the two damp paper towel layers.

Step 6: Cover With a Second Plate

Take another clean plate and place it over the top of the paper towel setup.

You should now have:

  • One plate on the bottom.
  • Moist paper towels and seeds in the middle.
  • One plate on top.

The second plate helps keep the seeds in a dark, protected environment during germination.

Step 7: Keep the Seeds Warm and Dark

Place the covered plates somewhere warm, dry, and dark.

Aim for a stable temperature of approximately:

  • 21°C
  • 70°F

Leave the seeds in this environment while waiting for the taproot to appear.

Many seeds may begin showing a taproot within 1–8 days. However, germination speed varies, and some strains can take up to 2 weeks to develop a visible taproot.

Be patient and avoid assuming a seed has failed simply because it germinates more slowly than another seed.

Step 8: Check Moisture Levels Daily

Check the seeds every day and make sure the paper towels do not dry out.

The paper towels should remain consistently moist throughout the process. If they begin drying, lightly add or spray additional spring water or distilled water onto the paper towels.

Avoid flooding the plate or leaving the seeds sitting in excessive standing water.

Step 9: Plant Once the Taproot Appears

Once a visible taproot appears, the seed is ready to be planted.

Carefully transfer the germinated seed into your chosen growing medium. Plant it approximately 5 mm below the surface and handle it gently to avoid damaging the emerging taproot.

The seed has now completed the initial germination stage and can begin early plant development.

4. Important Germination Tips

Small details can have a major effect on germination conditions. Follow these recommendations throughout the process.

Always Use Spring Water or Distilled Water

Use spring water or distilled water for both the initial 14–18 hour soak and the paper towel stage.

Tap water can vary depending on location and may contain chlorine, minerals, salts, or other substances that can affect germination.

Avoid Touching Seeds With Your Fingers

Whenever possible, use clean tweezers to handle seeds.

Natural oils, dirt, and contaminants from your hands can transfer to the seed surface.

Keep Paper Towels Moist, Not Flooded

The paper towels should remain consistently moist but should not be dripping wet.

If moisture levels decrease, lightly add more spring water or distilled water.

Maintain a Stable Temperature

Keep the plate setup at approximately 21°C (70°F).

Avoid direct sunlight, excessive heat, cold drafts, or large temperature swings.

Keep the Germination Setup Dark

The second plate helps maintain darkness around the seeds.

Keep the covered setup somewhere dark and protected while waiting for the taproot to emerge.

Give Slower Seeds Enough Time

Not every seed germinates at the same speed.

Some may germinate within a few days, while others can take up to two weeks.

5. How to Store Seeds Before Germination

If you do not plan to germinate your seeds immediately after delivery, keep them in a cool, dark, dry, and stable environment.

Protect them from direct light, excess moisture, heat, and repeated temperature fluctuations.
