The Benefits of Photoperiod Marijuana Seeds

Photoperiod cannabis is often compared to its counterpart: Autoflower cannabis. Autoflowering seeds don’t utilize light cycles to progress through growth stages, instead relying on an internal clock for hormone changes.

There are advantages to both, with photoperiod cannabis effectively being the more difficult variety to grow. Here are some benefits of growing photoperiod cannabis and why so many people choose it for their gardens.

Bigger Yields

Photoperiod cannabis will always have bigger yields than Autoflowering cannabis strains if you want large buds and lots of them. This is related to the time it takes for each variety to grow.

Autoflowering cannabis is usually ready within 9 weeks. It can take up to 4 months to grow photoperiod strains from seed to harvest. Regardless of how much nutrition you pump into your Autoflower weed, a photoperiod plant will always have larger harvests.

Vegetative Growth Opportunities

Low-stress training involves physically altering your plant during the various growth cycles. This requires bending and manipulating the weed to grow more bud sites with stronger stalks.

The downside to vegetative growth training is that it requires time for the female plants to heal afterward. Sometimes it can take up to 2 weeks for your plant to fully bounce back. To an Autoflower plant, a week is precious time for leaf or bud development and should not be wasted healing.

Photoperiod plants benefit greatly from training techniques since they have ample time to come back stronger. It is too risky to attempt this with an Autoflower unless you have strong genetics and your environment is dialed in for minimal stress.

Preserving Genetics

Cannabis mother plants are a great option for keeping a phenotype in production, as you can perpetually take off clones when you need a new crop. It requires keeping the plant in the vegetative cycle so that it keeps producing new shoots.

You can see where this is going once you realize that an autoflowering strains will always go into flower, regardless of what you do to try and stop it. You can’t have a mother plant if it changes into a flower on its own schedule.

Photoperiod vs. Autoflowering Cannabis Strains

The primary distinction between these two types of strains is how they begin their blossoming stages. The transition from the vegetative to the blooming stage is triggered in photoperiod strains by a shift in the light schedule.

Photoperiod strains will remain in the vegetative stage indefinitely, provided they are exposed to light for 18 hours each day. The blooming phase of the plant will not begin until after the lighting cycle has been altered so that it receives 12 hours of light every day.

On the other hand, autoflowering strains are genetically engineered to begin flowering at a certain point when a predetermined period has passed, independent of the changes in the light cycle. Autoflowering seeds are great for beginners who are unsure about a lighting schedule.

Are Photoperiod Seeds Good for Beginners?

Growing photoperiod feminized cannabis seeds is great for budding growers because you get to experience everything from start to finish. You’re in charge of everything from lighting to training.

Some strains are easier to grow than others, and it’s recommended that you start with a low-maintenance Indica, as they can be quite forgiving with errors. When they finish flowering, they are easy to harvest and you can enjoy fresh cannabis at anytime.

When Do You Need to Buy Photoperiod Cannabis Seeds?

The months of April through November make up the outdoor growing season in the Northern Hemisphere. The more north you travel, the shorter the summers and the colder the winters will be.

The season runs from August to April in the Southern Hemisphere, which is the opposite of how it is observed in the Northern Hemisphere. Naturally, certain areas will stand out from the rest of the map. But unless you live close to the equator, where the natural day and night cycle is nearly always 12 hours long and remains consistent throughout the year, you must conduct some study.

Growing cannabis seeds indoors can be done anytime, as the indoor climate is regulated for optimal growth.

Where to Grow Better: Indoor vs Outdoor?

Indoor

Feminized photoperiod seeds are very helpful for the indoor grower when it comes to regulating the state of the plants. This means that regardless of the cannabis variety being grown, the female plants will behave as they should, growing under a vegetative photoperiod of 18/6h and flowering when the photoperiod is changed to a flowering photoperiod of 12/12h.

Indoor growing will generally yield less as the female plants are restricted to their grow room size. Plants grown indoors have a higher survival rate than those grown outdoors, and if feminized seeds weren’t chosen, to begin with, it’s less time wasted if some of the plants grow to be male.

Outdoor

Growers have spent many years developing the perfect photoperiod cannabis strain to be grown outdoors. They are bred to survive harsh conditions, but light pollution is a major cause of concern for any regular photoperiod seeds

Light pollution, such as that caused by neighboring street lights or pauses in the dark cycle, even if just for a brief period, is problematic for flowering photoperiod seeds since the plant is dependent on uninterrupted hours of darkness to produce its flowers.

It is possible for photoperiod plants to revert to the vegetative phase, demonstrate sexually dimorphic traits, generate poorer yields, or fail to blossom completely if they do not receive the essential hours of uninterrupted darkness.

How Do You Grow Photoperiod Cannabis Seeds?

Lighting Schedule

Photoperiods are cycles of illumination that dictate when your plant progresses through the various stages of growth. The most basic photoperiod to follow for growing weed includes 18/6 (18 hours of light to 6 hours of dark) for vegetative and 12/12 (12 hours light, 12 dark) for flowering.

Some strains work better on slightly modified lighting schedules, but usually only in the vegetative state. Disregarding the 12/12 photoperiod for flowering can cause your plant stress which affects the health and yield.

Nutrients

There are three basic macronutrients (used the most) and about 9 other micronutrients that are the building blocks of weed. Your female cannabis plants need different amounts of these nutrients at different stages of growth.

Thankfully, photoperiod weed has an easy range to stay within. For any deficiencies or toxicities, there are clear signs that you can use to fix the balance.

Low-Stress Training

Looking to get the biggest buds or more main colas? Topping your plant, or snipping the topmost growth, encourages the cannabis plants to grow more main stems.

Slightly twisting your main stalk and side shoots until you feel a snap will signal your plant to beef up its stem strength. In the end, this enables your plant to support massive flowers without them falling over and away from the light.

These techniques require the plant to heal and should not be performed on unhealthy crops. Photoperiod cannabis plants thrive off low-stress training when performed correctly.
